Richard Chichakli: a tale of injustice

It was an early morning in Texas on that Tuesday of April 26, 2005 when a long line of government vehicles was seen approaching a quiet middle-class Richardson neighborhood. The convoy stopped short of the house with a blue door on Syracuse place, and dozens of heavily-armed masked men in armored battle uniform poured from the black trucks and rushed to position themselves around the target house where a family of three lived for twenty years, the house where an accountant named Richard Chichakli lived.  At 6:00 am of that day, a story beyond imagination began, and today, few years later, it is still unresolved despite that all of what it was based upon has been proven false shortly after it began.

On April 26, 2005 shortly after 8:00 am, and while the government agents in Texas were still busy dismantling and destroying the life of the disabled United States Army veteran Richard A. Chichakli, the spokesperson of the Bush administration, in a special press conference held in Washington, DC, declared triumph for the destruction of the business of a person named Victor Bout. That Russian person was not ever in the United States, nor he ever worked or had business or assets in the US.  In fact, the life that was destroyed by the Bush administration to claim triumph was that of Richard Chichakli and his family, there was nothing there that belonged to anyone else. The search and seizure yielded nothing, no smoking guns, no evidence of any wrongdoing, no support to any government assumptions, and no violation of any laws. Therefore, the US government did not, and has not until this day file any charges or bring any legal action against Richard Chichakli for any reason whatsoever.

The Bush administration kept its action under what is known as “OFAC administrative procedure” in order to circumvent the US legal system, and then it deployed every possible trick to keep the matter away from being tried in a US court of law, including the use of the “Secret Evidence” tactic and which was deployed to dismiss the suit brought by Richard Chichakli against the US government in the Federal Court on August 25th, 2006.

More than six years have already passed since the Bush administration started the investigation in October 2002, and yet, there is no end in sight concerning the matter of Richard Chichakli. The US government turned every stone, and searched every corner worldwide looking for any reason to justify its action or bring charges against Richard Chichakli, and it always came empty handed. The groundless assumptions were proven wrong, and the propaganda theories were demonstrated false; however, the “status quo” in the matter of Richard Chichakli remained unchanged. In simple words, the Bush administration will not admit to have made a mistake, for a matter of fact they never have, not ever.

The story is too difficult to consume and so wild to believe; yet, it is real and it contains too many turns of events, and too much action that was played on many stages around the globe. Subsequently, the virtually unknown small North Texas town accountant who used to prepare taxes and payroll checks for small businesses, and courtesy of the Bush administration became so commonly discussed by the international media, his affairs are so frequently debated in the United Nations Security Council, and his name appears in all of the world’s language on the internet and on every security screening system in every port around the globe.  The small time CPA, became a world’s figure; and yet, without being asked a single question by any person from any law enforcement agency, and without being given a chance to defend himself, or allowed a trial in a court of law.

This story happened in the land of democracy, the United States of America during the presidency of George W. Bush, and has been witnessed by the American people and the whole world.  Soon, the Bush era will come to an end, and Richard Chichakli, among many, hopes to receive justice…  Justice delayed is Justice denied.
